Description

Vitamin C is critical for the proper functioning of immune cells. It is also a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from the oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which are associated with several diseases. Vitamin C has been used for years to reduce the symptoms of colds, about one quarter of which are caused by other coronaviruses. A meta-analysis of studies that enrolled more than 11,000 patients showed that it also reduced the risk of contracting colds. Perhaps the most direct evidence for vitamin C’s use in COVID-19 is a study demonstrating that it reduced symptoms in patients with sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by other viruses.

Zinc is essential for immune-cell development, and some studies have found that it reduces the risk of contracting respiratory infections. It may also reduce the number of days that someone has a cold or other respiratory tract infection. Many adults are deficient in zinc, so taking a moderate dosage as a supplement may be beneficial.

Vitamin D3. Several studies early in the pandemic found that countries with populations that had low levels of vitamin D, on average, were more likely to have serious outbreaks and higher mortality rates. Other observational studies abroad found that individuals with vitamin D deficiency were more likely to be hospitalized.

Covid-19 evidence: A study of 20 European countries found a link between low levels of vitamin D and higher percentages of Covid-19 cases and mortality. Separately, more than 80% of 200 people hospitalized for Covid-19 in Spain were found to be deficient in vitamin D, according to a study published in October in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Vitamin D treatment should be recommended in Covid-19 patients with low levels of vitamin D circulating in the blood since this approach might have beneficial effects in both the musculoskeletal and the immune system.

Another study tested the effects of vitamin D3 on Covid-19 patients by adding it to the treatment for one group and not another. Of 26 people who did not get the vitamin, half ended up in the intensive care unit and two died. Of the 50 people who got the vitamin, one went to ICU and there were no fatalities.
