Description
Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in a few foods, added to others, and is available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced endogenously when ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.
Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal bone mineralisation. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps to protect older adults from osteoporosis.
Other roles in the body include reduction of inflammation as well as modulation of such processes as cell growth, neuro-muscular and immune function, and glucose metabolism.
Vitamin D is essential to the health and functioning of your immune system. It enhances the pathogen-fighting affects white blood cells that are important parts of your immune defense and decreases inflammation, which helps promote immune response.
Many people are deficient in this important vitamin, which may negatively affect immune function. In fact, low vitamin D levels are associated with an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infections, including influenza and allergic asthma.
